What Is a HAZWOPER Refresher Course?

Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) is a type of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training. Hospital staff, general industry workers and other employees who may be exposed to dangerous substances take HAZWOPER trainings.

After you receive the initial training, you must take an 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher course each year according to OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120. American Safety Council® offers online options of this course through OSHAEDUCATIONCENTER.COM℠. Our easy-to-access online trainings make earning your certificate of completion convenient, affordable and fast.

You can begin the course as soon as you register. Enroll in our 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher training now and get started today.

What Is HAZWOPER Training?

Before taking the refresher course, the first step is to complete the full initial HAZWOPER training. You may be required to take either the 24-hour or 40-hour HAZWOPER course to earn your certificate of completion. Whether you take the 24-hour course or 40-hour course depends on the level of contamination you’re exposed to on a hazardous waste site, or permissible exposure limits (PELs).

If you’re a site worker in an environment with a low level of exposure, it’s likely the 24-hour course meets the requirement from OSHA. Looking to earn your 24-hour HAZWOPER certification? Register for American Safety Council’s online HAZWOPER training to get started.

In our training program, the course material is divided into 14 modules that cover topics like confined space, fall protection, toxicology, decontamination and site safety planning. You will also review some of these topics in the 8-hour refresher course.

Who Needs to Take a HAZWOPER Refresher Course?

Those who have met the HAZWOPER training requirements and earned a certificate of completion need to maintain its validity by taking an annual refresher course.

The 8-hour HAZWOPER course is required for those who work at hazardous waste sites or handle dangerous materials through clean up, treatment, storage and disposal of hazardous waste.

Employees Who Need to Take a HAZWOPER Refresher Course

The online HAZWOPER refresher course from American Safety Council provides a certificate of completion once you finish the training. You can download Completion Certificate (#9031) once you pass the course.
